Research & Technology Infrastructures
We share expertise to optimise and improve hydrogen infrastructures
Hydrogen Europe Research has set up a Research & Technology Infrastructure Working Group to support the development, deployment, and integration of hydrogen technologies into various sectors, in collaboration with research institutions, industries, and governments.
Research and Technology Infrastructures (RIs and TIs) play a critical role in accelerating innovation and enabling the scale-up of hydrogen technologies across Europe. These infrastructures provide the facilities, equipment, testing environments, and expertise required to develop, validate, and demonstrate new solutions before they are deployed in the market. By supporting experimentation, pilot testing, and system integration, RIs and TIs help bridge the gap between fundamental research and industrial deployment, thereby enabling faster innovation cycles and reducing technological risks.
To fully leverage their potential, HER will develop a mapping of the existing hydrogen-related RIs and TIs across Europe, whilst simultaneously reflecting on a common understanding and definition of what constitutes RIs and TIs in the hydrogen sector. Highlighting RI and TI facilities can improve visibility, encourage cross-border cooperation, and promote more efficient use of available resources by researchers, industry, and policymakers.
At the same time, mapping and analysis of current infrastructures can help identify gaps and future needs. Certain segments of the hydrogen value chain may lack adequate testing, validation, or demonstration facilities, particularly for large-scale systems, integrated applications, or emerging technologies. Identifying these gaps is essential to guide future investments and ensure that Europe develops the necessary RIs and TIs to support the deployment of hydrogen technologies.
