Advancing hydrogen research and innovation in Europe

Hydrogen Europe Research is one of the three members of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, together with the European Commission and Hydrogen Europe. This institutionalised European partnership supports the development and deployment of a European value chain for clean hydrogen technologies.

Formally established in November 2021, the partnership brings together the scientific capabilities of the European Union to accelerate innovation in clean hydrogen and contribute to the transition toward a low-carbon economy and climate neutrality by 2050.

At its core, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership builds on the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, expanding both the scale and ambition of hydrogen research and deployment. The initiative focuses on several key areas all along the hydrogen value chain and also emphasises innovation and system integration, meaning it does not just fund isolated technologies but supports complete hydrogen ecosystems, linking production, infrastructure and end-use.

The Partnership's Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda is largely shaped by EU policy and related developments, supporting their implementation. Its activities primarily concentrate on renewable hydrogen production, as well as hydrogen transmission, distribution, and storage, together with selected fuel-cell applications for transport, buildings, and industry.

Hydrogen Europe Research members, in collaboration with Hydrogen Europe members, participate to the annual elaboration of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership Calls, namely the identification of annual priorities and the elaboration of research & innovation topics that will be funded by the Partnership. This process covers the whole year, with multiple iterations and meetings with the European Commission and Programme Office of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, under the supervision and coordination of the Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research Secretariats.
